The Australian Research Landscape and its Place in the Global Innovation Sector

Presentation at Research Forum of the 2012 Bushfire CRC and AFAC Annual Conference.

Australia has an enviable history as an innovative country, punching well above its weight in terms of knowledge production and high quality research. Our medical research is outstanding, as is our environmental research, our geosciences, and many other fields. In this talk, I will overview the shape and impact of Australia's research, highlighting our major areas of collaboration and our collaborating partners. Even though our expenditure on research has been relatively modest, the Australian Government, like many others, is seeking to understand the global significance of our research in terms of its quality and impact. I will outline some of the key drivers to research production within the Australian University system and provide suggestions for how the whole Australian innovation sector can achieve global impacts.
