Abstract | This project investigated two meteorological contributions to complex fire behaviour: (i) wind direction variability, known to broaden fire fronts leading to more rapid fire propagation, and (ii) wind influence on fire plume structure, with emphasis on firebrand lofting potential. Prior to this research a knowledge gap existed, with this research investigating in depth boundary layer rolls and their role in creating smoke plume lofting. The study found that boundary layer rolls increased the variability in wind direction, increased firebrand lofting, enhanced fire danger conditions and triggered the development of pryocumulus (thunder storms). |
